These days were spent at Jarmos hostel in Borghamn. I brought my mother and some relatives there for celebrating her birthday. The place is nice and quiet and also a perfect spot to have as a base for fishing out of Omberg area. I went fishing a couple of days trying to hook one or two salmons since it's to be good fishing around there now.

Friday was a windy day. Some 8-9 m/s northwest with gusts reaching 10-12. On the eastern side of the lake it can be tough fishing, but in my Warrior we had no problems managing the waves or the wind. We used five rods and hooked a double Lake Wättern triple. Two salmon 68 and 75cm, two char 60 and 65cm, two trouts, one legal size and the other under size. But still, - a Lake Wättern triple is a really nice catch.

On saturday there were King Winter Salmon i the area. A fishing competition all over the fishy spots! Some boats came really close to us, obviously not having a clue about the rules to be followed so we don't mess up our boats and gear in a hellball.

Well,well, i tried another spot instead. We caught ours salmons day before so there were no rush after them. It looked really good some time during early afternoon and then it started to snow. That was it, fishingday was over for this time. And it seems as Bay of Motala will have a rest for some time since there is thick ice at the boat ramp now.

Before the snow started to fall we caught a 60cm char and had a nice strike on another rod. The planer backed and lifted a meter up i the air, so there were a nice trout or salmon on there for a while but it went loose. Both days a flie caught most fish. Home made apex took one fine char and a baitfish behind a flasher had a couple of strikes too.

This year I'm going to fish a little bit more and even work a little bit more with horses.

I'll make things a little bit different and maybe learn some more new things thay way.

Team Suzuki-Salsa in Lake Wättern week 50.

Last week was windy at Lake Wättern. Team Suzuki-Salsa still had their christmastrip settled for trying to get a salmon or two. They come every year and stay at Borghamn hostel as their base. This years catch from the lake was good. Both in numbers and size the salmons caught made their trip rememberable.
I visited them one day and managed not to catch even a single little char during the whole day. There was two fishingtournaments going on around us, typical enough. Only a few salmons caught that day, no big ones, so no big deal not getting any fish at all that day. I was still busy trying out my new Pentax k-5 camera and all shots from now on will be taken with that camera.

Suzuki- Salsa had during the week nine salmons and seven char caught. At least this is what they raported. They didn't fish every day due to windy conditions, so the average in fish caught was something like one point five salmon and one char caught per day during the week.
There is fish in the lake but it´s not an easy task to go and get them in wintertime. Team Suzuki-Salsa did that well.
Average wind was something 13m/sek on the days they fished! How do you set a baitfish to swim i those conditions? I use Vuoksiraksi since they are easy to fish with but everything works if you know your tools.

Even though we didn't get any fish the day i fished with them i had something really nice with me home.

This is a nice way of fishing salmon. Boats aren't to big, and they seem to get some good fishes too. The launching of the boats and taking them out of the water is quite spectalular. I think it's a good idea to use a boat made of aluminium for this type of fishing, eh? But i think the boat in the clip is made of plywood. With epoxy it's a very strong and light method to build a boat like this.Boats with flat bottoms seem to be far more useful as it looks like. Maybe getting time to settle for an even smaller boat for me? This clip is from the west coast in USA. I found it on vetouistelu.com

Yesterday:
We gave the salmon another shot out of Hästholmen, to catch some fish bigger than we did last week. This was not going to be too difficult, eh?
We met a lot of other anglers trying to catch the same salmon that we were after. Lot of locomotion and activity in the harbour which was fun to see. I was expecting lot of fish reported on the lake to be heard on the VHF, but that just didn't happened this day. Some smaller salmon were caught, but as it looked and the little we heard people from people on the radio, they caught mainly char. Just as we did!
We fished off a lot of spots in our search for the salmon but kept running into schools of char. When we changed to bigger baits some bigger char started to strike, but the main size on the fish were between 50-55cm. We released most of them outside the boat, but some were damaged in their gills so they will be at the christmastable. But we caught some really nice fish this trip too: one really fine char, that had little more fat to be put on the body and when that happens it will be a fish in 3-4kg size. That fish was released too, off course. The second fish was an incredibly nice looking trout. That fish bit one of Berts flies which was a start of a new flytying era for him ;-)
The fish was released outside the boat as usually. Some fish we just had to net so we could get out the hook with plyers. I practised something i have seen on TV sometimes, when they take out the hooks on fishes: i keep the fish up and down. The fish will be a lot more still then and it will end up in the water faster which increases their chances to survive. The char has had some good years to reproduce, there is a lot of them now, but they are a rare specie of fish, still well worth to protect. Bring home some to eat, but be careful about the one ment to set free.
Bo Pedersen, Team Tortuga from Motala is a good fellow fisherman: Yesterday morning before we even had got out of the harbour he had caught his first salmon. During the day he caught some more of them and a nice trout. He released them all even though the fish weighed 4-5kg...Reason for that he said, was that they were ment for someone else to catch and he had enough fish in the freezer from his fishing earlier this year in south Sweden.
I will still try to get a nice salmon, so i will turn up in north Lake Vättern as soon as possible. There are a lot of spots to go thrue this winter. I don't understand the meaning with blogging from the lake, even though it seems to be fun. Now some people have found out how to get the GPS-info from photos taken on a good fishingspot, and use them instead of looking for their own little secret spots to fish at. What is there to say about this? One of the answers might be that it will extremely crowded at a few good fishingspots. The rest is left for people like me, without blogphones on the lake. Halleluja fishermen, let's go none tecnofishing, fish only with baitfish and hairy flies. See you at the lake!

Hästholmen

Fishing yesterday out of Hästholmen wasn't really in my plans since i fished several days last week in lakes Vänern and Vättern. A late phone call from Bert on saturday evening, with promising winds and somewhat good reports of fish caught from Hästholmen, made me think otherwise. So we went there sunday morning. Weather was a bit chilly and wind as usually more than weatherforecast said. We choosed to fish south from Hästholmen. Could have gone north as well.
We had a good day on the lake: First of all everything worked really well. All electronics and engine did what they was supposed to. Didn't miss a beat! Bert has been fishing mullet for months and after some refreshing gymnastic exersice on a bumpy lake in a small boat he was soon back in business.
We used all types of tackle during the day and we had fish stricking all of them. We used baitfish on
Vuoksiraksi Vr 2, Salsa, Anchovy special. Flies specialmade in Finland, Apex, Strike-pro, Prehistoric Stive behind an even older hammered flasher. Some fish bit baitfish behind an Actiondisc. We had about 15 contacts. Not all of them came to the net, but were released outside the boat nicely and gently. All fish was taken on the surface or shallower then 30 feet.
No idea how many strikes we had during the day. Probably to many, since we went out of the areas with smaller fish as soon as we entered them, but it was too late when we had double strikes. It's not a good idea to hook so many small fish for catching three or four fish in legal sizes, is my opinion. But the fish we kept was really fine. A couple of char and a 70cm salmon was brought home to the coming christmastable. Next time i go for the big salmon, probably coming weekend if winds are ok.

I have been fishing three days this week. First day in Vättern on monday which was a good start on the season. I saw and photographed some spawning chars in the harbour in Huskvarna. Just fantastic to see this show on first row and even take some descent photos with my little pocketcamera. After the show i went fishing: fished off some spots outside Liakanten and Äppelodligen and managed to hook a fair char to take home for the x-mas table. You never know what happens in a few weeks, so better bring home a fish when i got it. I also discovered some electronic faults on the boat, so there were some things that had to be fixed before it gets really cold.
On thursday i went fishing with Robban Qvist, fiskepånätet.se in the water out of Åmål. We tried to fish the Bassängen(bathtub). The location was new to me, but Robban has been there before. We had some, i think four, really fine fish biting our lures during the day, but for some strange reason they were not hooked properly, even though we fished in speeds around three knots. Finally, in the evening, we had a nice salmon taking one of our baits, well hooked, all the way to the net. Fish weighed 7.1kg.
On friday we were joined by Ludde from teamlundbergsvahn.blogspot.com and we had a nice day on the lake. We fished in the Tössewaters, also new for me. The weather was fine but the wind could have been less strong. We had constant wind somewhere between 9-11m/sek during the day but managed to hook some really goodlooking trouts weighing 3 and 6.7kg. Both days we fished in pair with Håkan and Erik from Alingsås. They did well both days catching nice fish. It's a good idea to fish in pair helping each other to locate fish and also handy to have an helping hand near is something goes wrong.
I had some trout and salmon with me back home and best of all; it was fun to fish from a boat again :-)

This browntrout i caught this summer. It's one of the fishes that has been a longgoing dream to get on a hook for me. As long as i have been able to fish i wanted to catch a fish like this and for the last 4-5 years i have every summer been back to a special little creek in northern Finland. I found out that this water cept a few very good looking trouts so i have tried to get one on the hook from this creek the last few years. I have always seen one, had them on the hook for a second or as last year i got one trout but it was a small one comparing to the one i got this summer.
When i came to the little creek i knew i get only one or two throws with my meppsspinner, then the fish will spook and i have to come back another time. So, at my location, just in the bend in the end of little bit more current water i threw my spinner upstream, maybe ten meters. It was just one meter broad where i had to place the spinner, so it had to be perfect right away. A second throw on this spot would not work. I knew this place was the feedingtable for some of the bigger trouts. I had already went thrue some of the other places and have had no contact with fish elsewhere, so the pulse was quite high when i saw the spinner, almost in slowmotion, hit the exact right place, where i wanted it to be. After just two rews on the reel i had a hell of a strike on the spinner and the show was on. The fish had the whole little pool to mess around in and it did. Sharp rocks, weed and treeroots were all possible places where to loose the fish. But this was my day. The trout was hooked well and easy to release from the spinner after the battle that took some five minutes. As usually i took the fish as hard as i could, not meaning ripping it out of the water. I knew that fish will be released so i kept it in the water all the time and even in the photographingmoment i kept it in the water. It was some 44-47cm long, fat and generally very healthylooking fish. It was released with not a single mark on the body and after a little rest it dissapeared in the deeper water in the pool. I saw a glimpse of it later when it had placed itself in the most current place in the creek. It's there now, to live and breed. This was for me a perfect catch. There is many, many more creeks that just waits to get explored, so i have several locations to aim for in the next hundred years i intend to live:-). It will be a lot easier to acess these kind waters on a horse and that is a part of a new project i'm up to now.

Fourth and fifth day, Hasslö.

Yesterday we went on a little tour and found not a single salmon but some other locations to seek through later, maybe next week.
Today we went out to the spot where we had good fishing on tuesday, but conditions had changed. We didn't find the big amount of baitfish, but the warmer water was still around and we found some smaller scholls of baitfish to hang around. We managed to catch two salmon weighing around 10 kg and released the both. It felt good to do that. We fought them hard as usually, using single hooks on our spoons and a new rubberised net from Fox left all scales intact on the salmon, so releasing them went just fine.
Tomorrow we are going to Mörrum for a visit at Laxens hus and then to Fiskeshoppen in Karlshamn for a chat and probably buying some spoons we don't need and then for a lunch at Väggahamnen to eat some salmon cooked in one or another way. A full day with fish without fishing;-)
For those coming to Hasslö to go for the big salmon you have good fishing just 1-2 Nm out of Knuven since southwesterly winds have pushed in some warmer water and also some salmon closer to shore. There is a lot of fish in the area and a very few garfish, so now is the time to go for the big ones. A couple of really nice nice fish is taken every day in the area so the time to get the catch a really nice fish is right now.

Yesterday we caught nothing except some garfish and cods. Some boats did well: a couple of nearly, magic 20kg were caught in Blekinge. They were around 120cm long and should have weighed over 20 kg, but they didn't.
Today we decided to go out and see if we could find some spots that could hold fish. Far out we found a school of baitfish, a big one, and passed it three times. That was enough since we had four fish in a very short time. They weighed 8,5-9,5-9,5 and 11kg. We are after the 15+ salmon so we decided to leave the place since fishing there seemed to be very easy. No need for us to take any more fish so went to see some other locations for bigger salmon. We have a clue where they can be and tomorrow we'll try to see if they are there.
All strikes are filmed with two cameras and will "Soon come to a computer near you" ;-)

We came here yesterday and went out to look at the conditions late afternoon. Water seemed to be ok, even though we got one garfish in the 7-8 C warm water, we found some hints to go after for todays fishing.
Everything works fine on the boat:
We caught some really nice salmon weighing just 10kg and another estimated 14kg on a rocking boat. Home, 8 hours later, bleeded, that salmon weighed 13.4kg.
The salmonfights are cought on film with two cameras. We have seen the films and especially the clips taken with the headcamera is just salmonfishing thrown in the face on those who will see the clips. We will not make any films of the clips on this trip, but below i have some photos from the fishes.
They took a grizzly spoon with sad colours and a Big Ed with happy colours. One salmon took behind a surfaceplaner and the other took on the downrigger.
Little bit windy today. But we are looking for a little bit calmer weather tomorrow.
Weatherforecast is sent on channel 25 on the VHF when Stockholm radio is saying there is a raport coming. Very good to know!

Hasslö.

We took a sunday to see and feel the waters out off Hasslö before soon getting there for a weeks fishing. We tried out the boat and equipment and everything worked well. We even caught some fish. Not very big but big enough for the grill next week. Some 4,5 kg salmon and a smaller one, to be back in the water.
Bert took a photo of the salmon with the new downriggerweights from Scanlure.
This weights tracked well, have no sharp edges, outershell made of plastic that will not destroy the boat if they accidently get close to the boats sides. We tried out our new cameras and they give a really good quality of the film. Some softwarebugs remains to get fixed, but in time those will be solved too. We have two cameras and hopefully we get something to film so we can cut our fishingfilms whole nights and fish all days:-)

I had a really weird thing going on when i had a tangle on my stacked downrigger rod and the inner surfacerod. Those two baits found each other and the surfacerods hook managed to get through the stacked spoons tophole. I have never seen anything like this so i took a photo of it...what is the chance doing this trick again?

The tangle was easy to solve, just take out the hook from the hole and the spoons went fishing again.

It's looking good for the weekend. Weather is going to be a bit cold but what the heck, just get on with the big suckers. Try to get atleast one 15+ salmon is our goal. Tight lines and be careful out there.

Vänern eastertime..and a WARNING!

Have to start this raport with a warning in swedish: Farledsmarkeringarna är ute och flyter och det krävs extra uppmärksamhet när ni kör i Kållandsö skärgård med många grund. Jag körde från Pål genom den norra farleden mot Hörvik för att svänga av till Spiken. De första käpparna som markerar ingången till farleden står fel. De ser ut att stå rätt. Mellanrummet mellan dem stämmer, men kör ni mellan dem stå går ni på grundet. Vi körde inte fort, tog det försiktigt, men skäddan på motorn fick ett nytt utseende när vi touchade stenen som nu ligger mitt i det som ser ut att vara farleden. Vidare saknades hälften av all pinnarna i resten av farleden, så kör försiktigt. Det kan vara så att detta är lagat, men var försiktiga ändå.

Fished out of Spiken monday-tuesday for testing the boat and equipment. Everything worked well and we could concentrate on our fishing. I have had problems with my GPS signal and have to do some research before i could have the problem sorted out; in my Raymarine 125 antenna, there's an small battery that must be replaced every 7 year. There is no info. about this in the manuals, but i had to go to an discussionboard about sailing where i found an discussion of this matter. So, check your antennas if there i an battery hidden somewhere in them that must be replaced once in a while. I know there is atleast one Garmin antenna that has the same system.
We tested also our new cameras, V.I.O Pov, they worked well, but there is a bug in the software that signals poor battery and shuts down the camera. The batteries are nearly full when this happends so either we have to carry kilos of batteries or have the bug fixed before we go to Hasslö in a few weeks. The camerapod is very exclusive! Take a look at the photo below.

Fishing was good for most of the boats last weekend. But on monday-tuesday it was fullmoon, northerly winds, very calm and nice weather. Just the way i dont like it. Bert and i had two bites on our baitfishes during two days fishing. We fished the strech between Klasgrund-Pålgrund on monday and south of Naven on sunday. That was also the place where we had our contacts. It is very cold water, 1-2 degrees outside of the nets, deeper then 30 meter. Warmer water inside, closer to shore, some 3-4 degrees. The deeper pockets close to shore seems to keep lot of baitfish and also some salmon and trout, so maybe we go back there sunday-monday to see if we cant get some fish aswell. Team Extreme fished in the same area but further south from us, closer to Måken and had a really nice salmon caught from there on tuesday. There is fish in the area but not many. Also Finnish Salsa Pro team have been visiting the waters for a week. They have caught fish every day. They have stayed close to Pålgrund and Stavas knall almost all the time. They catch their fishes early in the mornings and usually when they pick up the gear for going home, so it seems to be either morning or in the evening when fish bite best for them. Noticeable is that they catch their fishes mainly with tackled baitfish and flashers in front of them. They are very skilled fisherman!
Weather is going to be really nice eastertime, diffucult fishing when it's calm, so we might try out some new waters and try some other fishing.

Sven Hille in Rostock has been out spinnfishing for trouts. Due to the cold winter trolling for salmon has been hard even in south Baltic sea, but there is some good pikefishing on Rügen and the the troutfishing from the shore is fine too, but Svens latest fishingtrip was headed to a river.

"I am just back from a few hour spinnfishing trip on a friends boat on our local river Warnow. I took this chance as a force 4-5 from west made trolling in the Baltic Sea impossible or at least not joyride. It took only 10 casts before the first trout was hooked. It was a small but very beautiful and powerfull fish which was released back to the water with good wishes for the future... Strikes countinued and we had some really nice fights. Not big fish, all in the range 50-60 cm but pure silver and very powerfull."

Svens raport from troutfishing. Very nice trouts! We will have permafrost here for a while, but they do well in South Baltic Sea. Soon they will start fishing for BIG salmon. Hopefully we'll see nice raports from Sven and Co.

"Hej Jussi,

yesterday´s fishing got a nice finale. After having caught good number of nice looking cod and fighting with wind/waves we were honored for keep trying to hook into a big seatrout. We got a dobble strike on (Apex like) Flat Jack spoons. The first one broke the leader in the first run and escaped but the second one stayed on the line and gave a nice fight both in water and in the air. Later this fish was measured to be 78 cm and the weight was estimated to be 5-6 kg. Really nice looking and sturdy fish! Some more fish followed before the happy crew went home.

My friend took home all the pictures on his camera. I will send you those on Sunday!"

Sven is fishing out of Rostock and waters around there. At the moment fishing after really sturdy seatrout is at its best there, but there's been caught nice fish closer to Denmark aswell. I guess best way to get there to those waters is to go to south Denmark by car or take a ferry to north Germany from Trelleborg or Ystad. Wsters in Lake Vättern and Vänern are covered in ice and maybe will be so for another month or so. Waters around Simrishamn might be good, but if you are after 10+kg seatrout, then places mentioned above are the way to go.

I tried fishing on Friday. First I had to change my plan where to fish  as new ice started to built up so finally I went to other places. Also  in this area all the water in the more shallow part (< 10 m) was coverd  by ice, so I went to 15-16 deep water and started to fish. Temperature  in the surface water was monitored all time and the minimum temperature  reached -1.5°C. Hower, to our surprice a few cod took our lures on the  downrigger. However, ice conditions did not improved even with rising  air temperatures and we finally stopped fishing at 2 PM. But to my surprise I was told today that a friend had a fantastic  fishing: having caught 3 trouts with the biggest beeing a XXL format of  9,96 kg and 95 cm. This happened on the same day when we were out, just  in this water which was covered by ice when we tried to fish there. I  will try to get a picture from this dream of a seatrout!" Mvh Sven

Out in the last minut without Gravlax on your cristmastable?
If you have an vacummachine and some salmon, that will sort out very fast. Put the fish and whatever your want, whisky, dill, whitepepper with salt and very little sugar in the plasticgbag and just vacum it with high pressure. Dont use table salt but grainsalt. The pellets will shoot into the fish by the pressure and you will have the fish ready in 10-12 hours. The fish will be in the bag till servingtime and the salt will not dry it out so fast because of that, so there is no need for so much sugar. Yummy!

We had planned a fishingtrip to Hästholmen, lake Vättern over the weekend so i dug out the boat friday afternoon. Took an hour. Lots of snow! Went back home to try to start up the engine, that didn't work. Had to take it in over the night and we had everything working except the GPS antenna. It kept eating fuses when we were fishing yesterday. Considering all the problems that appear wintertime with electronics and engines, we had really good fishing. We fished down south from Hästholmen. The weather was ok, except for forecast for the wind that was completely wrong. We had winds far over 10m/sek where we fished. One wave even came over the boat from the front and we had everything wet and after a while none reel worked at all. Ice all over! Little bit further out we found out we got less char that was coloured from spawning, so we stayed most of the time there. In the the wind, waves and snow we got our baites fishing well. Atleast Bert who had found an prehistoric Grizzly Stive and an Abe & Al flasher that worked really well. He also had some Bassminnows that he use for seabass fishing and they worked! A third little Apex 1,5" took some nice char.
I had a VK-flasher, with Salsa UV with baitfish doing a good job. And an customized Anchocyspecial on a baitfish rigged with an actiondisc had some bites and also some fish. Also a little fly, with actiondisc in surface was fine. That little fly took the one and only salmon we had during this trip. It was returned since it was a to short. We fished between 15-30 feet.
We had 11 fish caught. We kept two Char and relesed the rest nicely without lifting them in the boat. There is plenty of Char in the lake now. These cold winters are really good for them, so what is really the point hooking and messing around with fish that has spawned and not in full condition? There is no good reason to do that, so atleast i leave till it's more human to go out fishing on open water.
Today, sunday, we didn't bother fishing. Lot of snow coming and wind was north something. We thought we had enough from yesterday. With no good reason to go out fishing again, we stayed on land and went home instead, wich was an adventure itself. It took some hours to get back home! Plenty of snow coming in the beginning but later it cleared up. My warrior will not be fishing again before the snow is gone so it's going to spend rest of the winter in good company with Berts two boats, Salmo 542 and the Quintrex 390.

Getting the boat in the water is one thing. Getting it up can be easy too..

Finnish Pro fishermen had a fullpott during tuesdays fishing. Salmon 5.4 and char 3,4kg as the best fishes. Two nice fish hit and left 100m line behind them before they got loose. Both on riggers and surface. Anoher finnish boat raported an 8kg salmon taken from the same area, wich is just outside or little bit south of Omberg. They used mostly Salsa and Vk-baitheads for their baitfish. Chrome experimental and dark, purple glow is the most productive colours on the baitheads and flashers. Pro fishermen do their last full day tomorrow. See you in Finland!

Finnish Pros stay at Borghamn Hostel at Jarmos place for almost a week. Targeting mainly the salmon but whatever in good size and right colour will do. The bites were very few during sundays fishing. Could have depended some on the weather! 10m/sek northerly wind and seven degrees below, is not the best conditions to fish on Lake Vättern.
We had some problems with reels and downriggers collecting ice, but still some fish decided to bite on our baitfishes. One char in orangered christmassuit visited the boat and was released quickly aswell. Another fish went on but was lost and some other bites were observed. We fished out of Borghamn down south as far as we managed during the day and then back again. Lake Vättern showed the reason why to have great respect for this lake: waves grow twice their size in just some minutes and those waves can be very high and short. Watch your back when driving in tailwind here. If you dont have good speed when doing that the waves can break just behind you and the water will end up in your boat. Buy a Ursuite, watch your back when driving in hard tailwind, be careful. Or, maybe best of all a day like this - stay at home!

Brother and Bert fished in Northern Lake Vättern, out of Karlsborg and had good fishing a couple of years ago.
Weather was windy and cloudy, but fishing was ok. Bert was looking for ideal place to mount his camera and at this time it was placed on the planerboardmast. Litttle bit far away from action, but close enough to catch some typical incidents that can happend on windy lakes and bitewilling fish that isn't pleased with only one bait
I fished nearby from my boat with Nikke from Team Jansson, and we had scimilar fishing. In other words very good.

Brother is floored by a big wave, but he's up, as shot from a slingshot, in a few seconds, continued fishing as nothing happend. Look at the clip here:

...and these are some really fast methods to launch a boat. It just happends to be Warrior 165, of some reason. Are Warriorowners little bit more nuts then others? Judge for yourself the two various ways how to wet the boats. Both are a bit of a Redneckstyle, but very usable if you have a boat tough as a warrior.
I have launched my boat in the Borghamn harbour, lake Vättern several times and it's a little bit like the example when the man let go of the boat from a pier. The harbour in Borghamn is probably the last one to freeze in all Swedish lakes, so that's is the best spot to launch a boat if you have panic to get salmon for christmas. Just a pitty the people in the harbour just doesn't make it a proper harbour for sportfisherman. I'll keep dropping my boat boat from the ramp as the man on the bottom example, since i just think Borghamn is a great place to book for a weekend and have as a base when fishing around the waters there.

Can it be done faster then this?

Some swearwords, seaweed and algees on places where it shoulden't be and a nice mullet that is bigger and stronger than it appears from the beginning, adds some spice to this filmclip.

New cool downriggerweights from Denmark

Look at these new enviromentaly friendly downriggerweights from Scanlure. The outer shell is some hardwear plastic and it's filled with irongrain instead of lead. The design of the ball is a little bit slimmer than a weight made of lead and will add up to the loss of weight. They are tough gear: Look at the filmclip on scanlures homepage where you see that they can bee abused badly and stand it. Plastic is tough stuff!
They also make a little weight that will be put on the line, very slim and fast to use, when trolling.
I coulden't find it on their homepage, but if you contact Scanlure, they'll give you some information. The weights are only for sale in Denmark this far and probably they will be for sale in Sweden aswell.
The reason why they make a weight like this is because in Denmark it's forbidden to use leadweights when fishing!! When will it be forbidden here?

New cameras for filming

Now we have all the things we need for fishing and thought we spend some hard earned money on cameras to remember it all! A good photo or filmclip on the fishing is a fine way to honour the catch too.

Trollingfisherman often buy bigger boats when updating their fishing. I have had my plans doing that too, but have figured out i will hardly never have use for a bigger boat then my Warrior 165. I can handle it alone easily and all the costs are in within my limits, leaving me to get us much fishing out of my boat as possible. I waste money on petrol and good accomodation when fishing. So adding a filmcamera and start doing fishingfilms with the Team is just natural.

So we are spending some more money updating Berts single POV v.i.o, with two

POV HD-filmcameras. One to be mounted on the boat and the second to be carried by one of us. With theese we can have twice as much material and hopefully do some more films to show on our blogs. Even cool to have them on dvd and watch them on TV, since thats where the biggest improvement will be with the new model.

We have priordered our cameras at sportscam.se. We will have them in middle of december if everything goes as planned.

It's a perfect camera to start with, perfect for active use outdoor, waterproof and very rough. All films on my blog and Berts are filmed with that camera. Little bit limited when showing films on big TV-screens, but fine for computers and but for the money Bert wants for, it's a good start filming and a bargain for that price.

Vänern with Andreas and his new boat.

Went to Vänern yesterday with Andreas for fishing waters west of Kållandsö. The trip was the first in his new boat. He barely have had time to finish all the work on it so small things as an example rodholders were mounted night before fishing, so the boat was as new as it could be. It worked really well considering there were just some finetuning on the instruments left, it was instantly a fine boat to catch fish from. We had some raports from good fishing in Dalbosjön, so fishing there was a good start.
First fish in the boat could have been a really nice one that bit a anchovy in a Vuoksiraksi baithead, colour "Finnish flag" trolled at 2 knots behind 30g. lead, but the fish went off the hook less then 10 meters from the boat. Such happends sometimes. That fish was strong!
We didn't have to wait long before an other fish took a baitfish fished behind a flasher, 26 feet down on the downrigger. This one didn't get away! The fish was in a very god condition, but Andreas took care of it well. The fish weighed in at 8.150 kg. Not very long, but very sturdy, full of baitfish (Nors). A Vk-flasher and a modified Anchovyscull with anchovy was that salmons last dinner!
The trout took a Tormentor, sal 25 in the surface. We fished all day between Klas and Pålgrund.

Very windy in the morning, NNW some 8-9m/s and cold! Huuh...
We managed to get out to our spots from yesterday, but there were nothing left on them to keep us there, so we kept going west to our spots on "bananen". There we had some hits on our baits, but only got a to small trout for the fishingbook.
Nice day, sunny, a bit windy and some fish, but to small.
Some boats fished around "mittledarn". LappiaJorma was one of them and he had a fourheader. Of them he got up two, one 9.2kg and another 5.5kg. Both trouts! That's the way to go!

Fished out of Mellerud, Lake Vänern today. Nice day with relative from Norway as companion. Markku did well and there were not to much wind in the morning but increasing in the afternoon with some 8m/s. We managed to hook on two small salmon and another salmon 64cm. A seagull visited the boat aswell. The bird gave some really nice sound in one of the reels after hiting one of the baits in the surface. After some dentalwork with pliers and thick gloves it went of, extremely angry but atleast alive. The 64cm salmon will be christmassalmon at some Norwegian party. Tomorrow we try to see if can catch some bigger fish. We had or bites at "Bananen" and outside of Kräklingarna. 8-9 degrees in the water.
Fish bit on Anchovy in Vuoksiraksi baitheads, bluewhite. Speed were some 2 knots to cover some water and fish it off tomorrow. A plug, Tomic 4 inch had some hits aswell, pearlblue i beleave it was.

Look, here it is! PERCH ACTION ON FILM!
Not a megasizeperch but big enough to be caught on film. The clip is only minut and a half long, but still fun. Beginning of the battle is not there. We were busy doing other things and simply had not turned on the camera. That's the way it is when testing new methods, equipment and places.

We tried our little lake a second time today. Same stile this time, trying to battle with big perch, that habitate the lake....we have heard.
Me, Bert and brother went there, in good minds. Weather was perfect. Fairly mild, wind from south. Slight breeze.

We fished off the area where we ended our fishing last week and continued just a few hundred meeters south from there and then we found what we came here for. Except for the fine company, nice lake and weather, we caught some really nice perch.
We had only one bite each on our roaches, during the whole day. Those fish we got up were good looking. They were no fish for the recordbooks, but one was really big, in my eyes.

Perches weighed 1.340kg. and the other one was not even weighed. I think some 500g.
Theese two fish proved us bottombouncing works even in beginning of november with 6.5 degrees C, in the water.
Perches of these sizes give a good go on 12 foot long matchrods with sensitive tops, and leaves a feeling and must trying it again, off course. Definately a method to explore more.

Berts Quintrex leaves nothing more to wish on a fishingboat. It's amazing how much fishing you can get out of a boat only 3.90 meters long. Three grown up men with 12 feet long rods and no hazzle at all.....or maybe we had a small caos some minutes when trying to land the the big perch. Big salmon is no problem, but when we get big perches we get unfocused like little boys, hehe. Live to learn...

..Or in other words - Testing Berts Quintrex and try to fool some perch with bottombouncing tackle.

We did ok, i guess; caught some perch, but not as big as we aimed for. We used 10-12cm long roach, but still got ordinary sized perch. Not the big ones we were after.

Using bottombouncing tackle is a new way of fishing for perch for me, so that had to be sorted out too. So trying to catch megasized perch, in a new boat, in a, for us, unknown lake, that we haven't tried before, on a cold octoberday, raining almost nonstop, was not easy.

This boat has never been fished from before, only testdriven and used as showboat at Wollmars sportfiske, Borås a couple of months. They are official Quintrex dealers there.

So, today was the day to try it out, the Tinboat! Conditions may not have been the best, but we fished enough to clear out some questionmarks.

-We were three people in the boat and we had no problems moving around in the just under four meters long boat. It feels a bit odd, considering the boat is very roomy and steady for being so short.

-Lauching and taking up the boat on a boatramp that isn't a boatramp, worked just fine. The boat is very light and Berts Bmw 330 coupé has fourwheeldrive, so even that was simple.

Brother and Daniel fished from a Quintrex 440, and they used the same ramp, and brought up their boat with a Volvo 745 and that worked fine too. There were some nasty sounds coming from the boatbottom when launching the 440, but the boats are rough aluminiumboats, so they can be treated like that. A glassfiberboat would have left a major part of gelcoat on the beach from this kind of beating.

The 390 went in the water in 30cm. shallow water without touching the bottom!

I went to Jönköping yesterday to see if i could have cought some roach for the perchfishishing next weekend. I didn't manage to catch or see a single little fish, what so ever. I blaim the northerly wind, off course. The castingnet flew several times all over the canal in the citycenter, but all i caught was peoples attention when doing my castingpractises. Maybe i should start collecting money for the show?

I like to use my castingnet. But i also use the classic style by Isaac Walton: Worm, hook, line and rod.

It's all depending on how much time i have to spend. A third way to get baitfish is to buy them from the commercial fishermens, right away. So from the Swedish westcoats i have some Anchovy (skarpsill), for sale. I have them in sizes 8-15cm.

Good for just about all fish when trolling but also when vertical jigging.

But some people must have had panic over the baitfish. Yesterday a net was placed just across the harbour in Jönköping! Click on the photo and you'll see the other markerstick to the left.

The scene could have been questioned by anybody and maybe something thing for the local news. But there was not to many people there at the moment so not many saw what was going on there.

Whem i had taken some photos, i saw the markersticks moving so there wasn't a net placed between them. Some people had played a joke during early morninghours and simply thrown the sticks in the canal. They belonged to a fishermen who's running a little restaurant and a fishsmokery on the pier, next to the harbour. The owner himself came and told me that they belonged to him after that i had picked them up! He thanked me for this, off course. We had a little discussion about the fishing in Lake Vättern and we were agree just about everything, except some small details as why the Char is increasing in the lake...Anyway, he had one good point; he would like to have rainbowtrout in Lake Wättern. So would I!

Another weekend without any fishing, what so ever to write about. Since i have dedicated my blog to almost only fishing, it's little bit hard try to relate everything to fishing. It might be a little hard to relate my doings this weekend to fishing, but i give it a go:

I have found others things to make me busy during weekends that may at first sight have nothing to do with fishing. I like all sorts of animals and woulden't mind having some if my lifestile could allow me to keep them and take care of them as they deserve. Cats, Dogs and Horses is what i like most. I have been more and more intrested in forestry last few years and could see myself harvesting and using horses for that purpose instead of machines that destroy, in my eyes, to much when collecting logs. I don't know where this new intrest for forest and horses is taking me, but this weekend i had the opportunity to take a course in handling workhorses. One place remaining on the course when i phoned the people organizing it, and, off course i decided imidiately that i wanted to take part of it.

Ohh man, i really didn't know wich part of the animal was back and forward, but was sorted out fast:-)

A complete Novis am I in this, really. I went to Ryasjö Hästgård two days in a row, sat-sun. We were some people there, taken care of some really professional people and really calm, welltrained horses, making it easy for me to learn how to put on the different gear on the horses and choose the right things for the purpose i wanted to do with the horse. Pull logs, wagon etc. And then, after training in the paddock for many hours we went to the forest doing the same things. This is among the coolest things i have done for a long time and of course i signed up for the two following courses. More training in the forest and then driving heavy loads of logs is what I want to learn properly, and more about the horses, naturlich.

This winter i will spend four days there and i'm allready looking forward to it.

This intrest for horses could come from my genes. Grandfather was a horseman, using horses long time even after buying tractors to the farm in north Finland. And his father was a horseman too...After some digging far deep i have found i like those animals too, simple as that. No, jumping, racing, betting with and on them. Just work with them, nice and slow in the forest without leaving any marks but a pile of shit here and there;-)

So what does this story have to do with fishing?

In Isaac Waltons "The complete angler" i know there is a description of lines, tippets and leaders made of horses tailstrings there. Hmm..That is a tough material and with soft rods, a thought in mind that the line and leader is a bit weaker than scimilar, modern ones, i think it's possible to land good sized fish with them. Just read below what they used in Japan not to long time ago. (yepp, horsetail)

Kurobe headstream area Flies of professional fishermen of Kurobe headstream that is in Northern Japanese Alps of 3,000 meter class in the border of Toyama Pref. and Nagano Pref. Three in the left are flies of Mr.Zenichirou Onikubo who kept fishing iwana (char) by the Kurobe headstream for 40 years. The hook was Kaizu No.14. Bantam of black in early season, brown in best season, black-and-white in autumn were used for the hackle each. The body was tied three times by silk black thread and was tied by peacock herl in summer. Shamisen string was used for the eye. The rod length was 3-3.6m.Horsetail was used for the line. After it had become hard-to-find, the nylon line No.3 (12lbs.) that was shortened 50cm more than the rod was used. The right side is the fly with a tail of Mr. Bunpei Sonehara who is last professional fisherman in Kurobe. He kept fishing iwana for about 10 years in Kurobe until the fishing area was lost by constructing Kuroyon Dam. The hackle was bantam of red brown. The body was tied 3 times by black thickish silk thread. The eye was not attached. The rod length was 3.9m. The furled tapered line of horse tail that is a little longer than the rod was used. The tippet was No.2 (8lbs.) 30cm. These are flies that I reproduced. I went to Huskvarna fishing yesterday. Did a little tour on "Liakanten" just outside Elmia. My fishingspots are just on the line of the protectionarea, so after september 15 it's not legal to fish there untill december 31, so i thought I try them.
I found some really good spots there and I will try to practice some verticaljigging after Arctic Char coming weekend if weather is ok. Yesterday was just perfect for that yesterday, but i wanted to try out the boat so everyting works just fine fore the autumns adventures. Went through "Liakanten" and had a nice fish biting a baitfish tackled to a flasher on just 16 feet. I had the fish in the net, but lost it.
Then i had another 4 bites. Fish hiting my baitfish but didn't stay on the hook. I also tried to fish outside the Silo, next to the highway, but had only one hit there. I got all fish biting on the flasher combination, but the only fish that i got up in the boat was an undersized char that took a 1 1/2 inch homemade, green Apextype of lure. All fish biting was between 15-25 feet of depth, wich is little strange since it was 14.3 degrees even on 100 feet. Who said Arctic char likes only cold water?

Tandemflasher!

I tried out a new system yesterday: A tandemflasher. Two VK-flasher tied together with a 50cm leader and the baitfish 1.20m behind the second flasher. I had some bites on this system, so i think it will work after some finetuning. When fishingday was over i met some fishermen in the harbour who told me they used "Spålänga" wich is a system of big spoons, a rod length long and then a small bait or lure tied to the the end of it. This was good yesterday, so i wasn't so far away with my tandemflasher. Very nice weather and this years last sunburn, but no fish brought home from this trip.

New gear with attitude!

A new fishingreel and rod for perchfishing. Shimano rarenium 1000 ci4 and a Pezon-Michel Gunki Kaze is new material for my jigging after perch. I bought them from

the address below. 95€ for the rod and 160€ for the reel. A lot less than in sweden. I Like fullcarbon rods. Very sensitive and longcasting, but i find them somewhat expensive considering how fragile they are.
I found out this summer that powerwindows on a car and temporary bad memory is a poor combination when good fishing is on.

That cracky sound when an expensive fullcarbonrod brakes is unmistakable and good for me i have several rods at our place so a new rod was not needed right away, but a replacement had to be bought.

I like smaller reels and this shimano rarenium will be just fine. Made of some spaceshipmaterial. Really light and looks good. Hopefully it handles braided lines better then my old Shimano Sedona 750.

Theese lures and baits are what we needed this summer to keep the smoker and the fryepan going every day. Perch, pike and trout likes theese baits!

Mepps size nr:2, Yum and Storm jigs and that little yellow handmade minnow from a local minnowcarver. Weird colours on the jigs and the minnow, but somehow they work. Perches are like humans - they also like colourful, fancylooking things!

Look at these perches! Fantastic colour on them, isn't it?

I was checking out one of my spots in Lappland. A small creek doesn't look like it can hold big fish.

But it does; I had a really good looking trout biting my spinner there a few years ago. I never managed to get it up, but i had it on the hook long enough to see it was a fairly big fish, considering the stream is really small. The fish was some 55cm long, at that time. I know, because i had it just to my feet before it got loose.

This year i went back to see if it still was there. When getting closer to the little pool i use to see them i saw a bigger fish fish getting away. I asumed it was the fish i have seen earlier years or another one, just as big. But when i tried to catch it in it's pool i started to get some really good looking perches instead of the trout, i was looking for.

Perches were really fat and had those fine colours. The water is really clean and the bottom on the stream is sand, so that's why those perches have the troutcolours. They were in really good condition and they all ended up in the smoker at home.

But i got one of the trouts in the stream aswell. A smaller fish, around 50cm. I saw it was lightly hooked so i let it free even without touching it.

The photos of that fish are somewhat blury, but they'll have to do.

S/S Puhois and regatta in Varkaus, Finland

On saturday, july third, we came with 23 other steamers to Varkaus, southeast Finland. City of Varkaus was the host for the regatta this year, so that was the reason why we ended up there. Saturday noon when all boats have arrived a conferencier introduced all boats. Names, owners and their purpuse during the times when they were used on the lakes. Towboats, cargo or passengerships arr the most common boats. S/S Puhois is really rear. Her hull is made of wood, has 20 beds and a sauna + we can sit 20 persons and have dinner at the same time. She's very roomy.

When conferencier is done he tells all Kaptens to blow the horns on their ship and that is a serenade out of this world. The serenade goes on for a minute...I wanted to record it this year, but i didn't hear the conferencier at all, so i missed the start and most of it fumbling with my camera. When i had it ready the serenade was almost over, but i was suprised of the little extra concert that followed.

I have a little problem getting the filmclip here at the moment...I'll post it here as soon as possible.

The photo is taken from Vierustunturi, Lappland, North Finland. This is the outbackcountry where i use use to hang around most of the summers, but now it's about time to update this blog and get into the ordinary life again. I'm back in Sweden. Atumn is up, lot of things will be caught up and that means lots of fishing.

I have had a really good summer up in north Finland and I will post some photos from there trying to show a little of that part Europe and what i have been up to there in the last two months. Plenty of fishing off course, but also a visit on to the old steamer s/s (steamship) Puhois has been documentated and i'll post photos here as soon as i pic the nicest shots.

My fishing this summer have ment many kilometers of walking. No paths or trails leads to the little streams and lakes i like to fish in. Very simple.

That means i have very little things with me. One rod, some lures, a bottle of water and my camera. Water and something to eat is not always necessary to carry, since there is plenty of grapes in the forrest and freshwater springs just about all over the place. No need to be hungry or thirsty there, for sure.

The fishing is as far away from fishing from a trollingboat as it can be. Summertime is a good time to go thrue many things, to think back, do some reflections, such as the way of fishing i have done for several years now.

In a natural way of looking on that kind of fishing it doesn't make sence at all. In our lakes and seas, population of fish is getting less. That's a fact. And there we go, trollingfisherman, with our boats, ten rods or more, boats stuffed with electronics, consuming petrol that makes only oilindustry happy...

I still like to be out there with my boat, weird, eh? It's very easy to get addicted to that kind of fishing. It is fun, and splitting costs, planning the fishtrip, makes it a little bit easier to get away with the enviromental costs on the nature and the bad concious in my mind, i think. The contrast between trollingfishing and my fishing up north is just as black and white. There are scimilarities in theese ways of fishing, but i leave them for now.

Andreas with his Tiveden project, Bert and my brother, chasing trouts and mullets and everybody else using very simple equipment trying to make the fishingtrip to more than a trip when cooler has to be full to make it a succesfull fishing, getting closer to the pure thought of fishing. Having the opportunity to catch a fish and release it aswell is nice. Verticaljigging has become really popular and i look forward to try it myself sometimes. I just like the idea of how ”nonematerial” that fishing can be. Still the boat can be used and almost all electronics with it, so that part is not wasted. Boats costs a lot of money to buy and own, so they should be on the water.

I (we)have slightly started to use less rods on our boat when trollingfishing. Brother has talked and pracised about it for years and both Bert has has done it that way aswell for decades. 6-8 rods when trolling - simple as that!

We try to go for the big ones in a way we belive in. Maybe we get less fish, but we like it that way since I full cooler is just not fun anymore. A couple of fish a day is just enough, if we even catch anything at all! If we need more to eat, we can just go and buy it from a supermarket. Cheaper for us and better for the small fish that we don't have to through back, maybe bleeding but definately full with lacticacid, making it very hard for it to survive when put back in the water.

Reason why i write down this thoughts is based on a happening yesterday, actually:

I went to a place that is good for raspberrys. I went past there on sunday when i was out running and found nobody has been there. Grapes all over the place! When i got there i saw a figure crawling down there from a huntingtower, that i haven't noticed before! The figure looked like a mix from the movies Apocalypse Now and Mad Max. He had a poncho or jacket and a hat full with feathers and leaves. He looked like a big bird when he jumped down from the tower securing his rifle. That rifle was BIG. It had a silencer and binocularsight sized like a 1 1/2 liter bottle. He was clearly pissed off, blaiming me from ruining his hunting! Maybe i did. I apologized but i also told him there were no signs informing me that there was a hunting going on. He took off and i picked my grapes. Now, afterwoods i can tell i knew the hunting for roedeer started yesterday but i i have forgotten about it and i didn't know that some people had their huntingareas just close to public paths...

Well, i saw that man, equipped up to his teeths with gear that in my eyes was just to much to kill a little deer, and somehow i just got to wonder what does people think of me when i come in my boat, ten rods on the boat, electronics aso?

Does that little fish really have a chance?

I have nothing against fishing from boats, but atleast i will pick my fihingtrips carefully and use less rods, single treblehooks on all baits, is a good way to spare smaller and wild fish.

Our fishing has become better using that "Less Is More" philosofy, i think.

Fisherman get to buy and learn to use the gear properly, less fuel is consumed, unvanted fish is saved.

Everybody is happy...probably the roedeer aswell, since they could eat the rest of the raspberrys when the scarecrow was off from the tower, hehe.

I have left sweden for Finland till August 10. I'm currently in Lappland but leaving this place for Savonlinna on thursday for loading up S/S Puhois (steamship) with 10 cub/m with birch. Steamin towards Varkaus on friday to meet up with 25 other ships for celebrating the fleet of steamers cruising Lake Saimaa. It's going to bee really fun!
Till then i keep doing repairingwork on our houses, do some fishing and also some running...
That running kind of sorted out allready, because reindeers are feeding on our flowers and bushes that we try to make grow on our little farm. A good way to keep the reindeers of the yard is to scare them and i do that, run after them like a bushman and it works...atleast daytime. In the mornings there ususally have been there someone there, at our yard, nicking some flowers and i dont think it's Santa Claus..

Andreas Jacobsson and his brother in Karlsborg have realised a dream. They are about to start up an Catch & Releasewater for wild and planted brown, brook and rainbowtrout, just the way they want it. The streams and lakes are located deep in the forests of Tiveden and that secures clean water in wild and forgotten backcountry. A perfect place for a limited amount of flyfishermen that will have the opportunity to catch and release wild and planted fish wich has been in the lakes and streams for a year and a half, before the brothers will open up the waters for fishing next spring. The fishing in these waters will be based on pay per fishingday. No fishingclub is involved. Only limited permits per day are to be sold.

Sven Hille in Germany sent me this nice clip wich shows some nice fishingmoments from fishing in waters around Rügen. The variety of fishing seems to be great there with short distances to really good fishing in a variety of species. I have heard about monsterpikes, cods, Big salmons and specially seatrouts that I'm really intrested in myself. Rügen is known for being really good for that, so hopefully I will get there some day trying the Big trouts.

The clip also shows some of the interior on a Warrior 165. It's remarcable three people have so much space in a five meter long boat! Svens boat is still for sale so drop him a mail if you are intrested in buying his warrior. On fridayevening i took out some young students to show how fishing can be done in a trollingboat. I took them to Huskvarna, Lake Vättern for a short trip, trying to see if we could catch trout, char och even a salmon. I fished outside the Silo and managed to the things go our way making trouts taking our baits. We had two of them in the boat. One undersize and one 57cm. Two more fish were on, but got loose. Fish bit on baitfish behind a Vk-flasher, baitfish rigged with Actiondisc and one homemade Monkey (apa).We had enough action to make the 5 hours fishing going really fast...and making the boys intrested in this kind of fishing. All in all a good fishing trip. Thanks Andrée and Johan for the company and doing good work on my boat.

I planned to do some fishing yesterday aswell. The boat and the car was packed and ready to go. Weather was fine, but when i updated my loggbook on saturday evening i found out, even doublechecking, that i haven't changed oil in the Suzuki since april 22, last year....wow!

I have been fishing many hours from other boats leaving me with not even 100h on my own boat in more then one year!! The long winter was one of the reason to the few hours and the poor fishing in the Big Lakes was another.

Those occations when i have fished from my boat have been somewhat harsh and I almost knew what the oil was going to look like. When trolling in really cold water the engine works hard and the oil use to look as it's been in the engine for years, so i knew what the oil was going to look like. Black, - after just 80 hours of trolling!

I also changed the oil in the transmission. I don't buy those expensive little tubes with gearoil. I get the bigger bottles for gearboxes or transaxels. As long as it says it's Gl-4 or Gl-5 on the bottle it's fine. It should be 90 oil, but i use 80. I fish generally in cold water and 99% slow, so that's why i go with this alternative. Just to save some money and make it less messy using one big bottle instead of four small! Read your instructionbooks for enginespecification before experimenting with your engines, to see what oil to use.

Now the boat is ready for a long rest...if i don't try the Salmons in Blekinge one more time, or the trouts and char in Lake Vättern or walleye in Lake Mjörn with Robban...

Karlshamn 29-30/5.

We made a short trip to Karlshamn this weekend for trying to hook another nice salmon and pick up the salmons we caught a couple of weeks ago and left in the smokery in Karlshamn for having them done properly. As you can see from the photo some of the pieces are something extra. Compare with the AA-battery. Both size and the taste is somthing to brag with, i must say!

From this weekends fishing we didn't get any salmons at all with us home, but we had our smoked salmon with us home so we didn't leave emptyhanded. We had a nice weekend me, brother and Bert. We fished south and west of Tärnö on good old spots. It's fun doing that with my brother and Bert. They have spent hours, days, months on that location and it's intresting to listen to all storys they can tell about their fishery down there.

Anyway, we managed to get a good size salmon to get hooked on a spoon, but we had it on for just a short time but enough to see it show its side for us, before it got loose. Nice salmon!

Water was eight degrees and weather were all sorts. Rain and sun mixed with a nice and steady southwesterly wind. Best salmonweather i think!

But its still spring in the water. Hornpike has not been in for spawning yet. We got some of them punctured by our hooks and they were full with eggs. So maybe some warm weather will give the salmon a boost to start moving towards Mörrumriver. And maybe fishermen will need a boost too - we saw only one boat out during the whole weekend!? Im going to Karlshamn in two weeks time to see if i can get a big salmon hooked again. But first i want to see some fish start raising in Mörrumriver. The salmon is out there and so will we.

We have had many readers commenting our films. Many thouht we could have turned off the radio while fighting our fishes, but i think there is some understanding that we usually get concentrated in what we do and forget about the rest, so the the films shows how the fishing is for us. Swearwords, playing with the VHF, coffedrinking while making the boat ready to land a Big Salmon aso, is probably not what should be on a fishingfilm like this, but this is how our fishing is, therefore we show it that way. We have had only positive comments about the fights and netting and that what counts in the end, to hook, fight and land the salmon. And have fun.

We spent 60 hours on the sea during the week we fished, the strikes were very few, so the fish that bit on our baites, we also wanted to have in the boat. We were after the Big Salmon, so when they came on on the other end of the line, we knew what to do. And we are glad to have all of it on film. So we will continue filming our fishing, off course.

We wanted one fine salmon, weighing more then 15kg on this trip. But today, day six of our Bigsalmonmission, we got another beast to bite one of our spoons. Almost same place as last time, almost same tactique. This time it was Berts time to take the fight. It took him 15 min to get up the fish. My turn to assist him this time.

Bert has lots of experience from fishing theese waters: Starting his fishing in Baltic Sea already in 1987, trolling for salmon, he knows how to be prepared for these predators. All equipment we used was specially picked to this fishtour. Bert picked his stiff pikerods, ambassadeur 7000 witch braided line, 0.32 and leaders in 0.52mm fluorocarbon. No locks used between spoon and line. Line directly tied to the swivel. All week points eliminated. Bert knows all this, experienced as he is in fishing really big salmon.

This salmon weighed 17.45 kg before we bleeded it, 120cm long. I think this was Berts tenth salmon weighing +15kg from these waters. When he is not sharpening his salmon hooks he is after his mullets, pikes or walleyes.

Many nice filmclips to be seen on his blog. Some are very exclusive. Rare to see when a mullet is running, taking line from a reel in incredible speed, but on Berts blog it's possible. Follow his fishing and see his films on his blog.

WE DID IT! MISSION COMPLETED! (Hasslö, day four) Also on film.

Hasslö, fourth day and now have made it, that we came here to do. We wanted one fish weighing between 15-20 kg and today we made it. In the morning Bert wanted to go east and i thought we should go west, so we went south. Far out we found clean water with no rubbish and also huge amounts of schools of fish so we started fishing there. Clarity was +15meters, so we knew it was going to be a difficult day - again! We were alone out there, so we just kept us around the schools of fish and in the afternoon we had the one and only salmon this far taking one of our spoons. 30g led 10m behind the planer was the trick for today, after being on the right spot, of course, after many, many hours of trolling the last four days. We heard Danes catching fish from the downriggers, smaller fish. We did the opposite, - going closer the surface with 30g led at most and 30 feet on the riggers.

In the afternoon, 14.30: The strike was massive! The fish bit a spoon just 10m behind the Norppaplaner! I have never felt more power from a fish and at some points in the short but intense fight i felt i had very, very little controll of the outcome of how this was going to end. But somehow we managed to keep calm and get the fish to the net. And were we happy?

We have fished together a couple of years and knew our rolles, knew what to do. Very important to have a good teamwork in moment like this.

The fish was 111cm long, 71cm around the waist, just under 18 kg, bleeded, seven hours later. Weight afterjust been caught was something between 18.5 and just over 19kg. Caught on a grizzly M spoon in some fuzzy colour. Watertemp. is still only six degrees, so that was to our favour. Wait another 14 days and it will take more then the 20 minutes, as the this fight took, to net a fish of this size. We were photografed in the harbour with our salmon by one of the authors to Scandinavian-trolling.se and later named to "Kings of Hasslö 2010" in that forum. Cool!

Yesterday we met a seal, out, middle of nowhere. As close to the boat we could hear it breathing. They spend time where the fish are, so we were right on the spot yesterday, - or maybe not. Salmon use to be as far away from seals as possible, i have heard. Today we managed to get our self out to Utklippan. Nice ride in no wind at all. Watertemp was still around 6 degrees, so we took a chance spending the day out there. We got some cods and one hornpike. The one and only in Hanöbukten, and we got it! This was our catch today. Some other boats managed better: One Danish boat came in with a 14.5 kg and one Swedish boat came in with two 8kg salmon and one smaller. So the fish is out there. We just let the water warm up a little bit more - then we take them! We keep doing our thing tomorrow. Shitfishing on us and everybody else.

Hasslö, second day.

Went out fishing south Hasslö 9.30 today. Weather was clearing up and we thought we would had a nice day on the sea today, and in the beginning it looked that way, getting warmer and sun burning away the fog. We heard boats raporting on the radio having fish on during moninghours, but no fish caught, as far as we heard. Middle of the day it became cold and foggy again. And the raports on the radio dissapeared completely till the weather cleared up and it became nice and a bit warmer again, about 5h later. Then people started catching fish again. We heard a couple of boats having fish in their boats in the end of this day. Not much, but the salmon is out there. The water needs to be little bit warmer and the wind should stay south or westerly for some days. Than it will look a lot better for us, chasing the big ones. I started tying baitleaders today. I even tried to fish with anchovy (skarpsill). No problems with Vuoksiraksi and my personaly owndrilled crippled herring baitholders. I ran them in 2.7knots. No problems at all, except we caught nothing on them today. We caught some cods and one of them joined us for dinner! Luxuryfood! Lots of boats in the harbour this evening, There will be some raports from the ocean tomorrow. If not us, then somebody else.

Hasslö,day one.

First day fishing out of Hasslö, Karlskrona. We had no hurry out fishing since there were still a bit windy around noon, but finally we got out. Just a couple of seamiles out from Hasslö we started fishing around 13.00.

We tried out some of Berts older spots from earlier expeditions down here. Had to start with something, since there were some boats out, but we heard nothing on the radio from boats catching any fish, so we fished around trying to find something that could make any sence. We did that- had a good day, finding a lot of baitfish and action on the fishfinder but cought nothing except some small cods and a lot of rubbish swept out from the shore by northerly winds. We kept cleaning the lines and spoons, reweighing and rebaiting out setup, but no big salmon decided to make our day today. Watertemp was 4,6-7,3 degrees on the places we fished on. Some southwesterly winds can make a big change and we hope for that. We stay here whole next week if we have to. Big salmon tour is on! Photo is from action on the fishfinder today.

We used Berts arsenal of reels and rods today. Look at these beauties! Twenty years old, as new, Ambassadeur 7000 syncro and St.croix downriggerrods. Fighting fish with this equipment is fun, but till the fish bites, we just have to rest our eyes on them! We try again tomorrow, to catch some BIG salmon.

Vättern, Huskvarna, May 2.

Went to Lake Vättern today with Bert. Fished out of Huskvarna. Went north to the see if we could find any fish on the normal spots, but there wasn't anybody home outside Fingal protectionarea. So we went south again, towards Jönköping. We managed to make some trouts and one char to bite over our baitfish. We used chromeheaded baitfish with 30-60g lead, slow speed on the turns and the boat was the recepie. Fish took also Apex and Uv-headed baitfish from the rigger. Fish took very gently in the cold water, 2,5 degrees. We had most of the bites in 30min. during the whole day!

Next week we will be fishing bigger fish, going to Karlskrona. Those bites from bigger salmon, will be easier to see, hopefully. Todays fish hardly managed to pull the line out of the releases. The water was soooo cold, huuh!

The char we caught ended up here! 58cm long and in good condition. Very tasty!

We had a nice day on the lake, though the fishing wasn't easy. We still had fun! Everything worked fine on the boat.

Raports from good fishing in Dalbosjön, Vänern made me and Linus take the boat on the trailer and go fishing there. The fishing south of Klasgrund towards Måken lighhouse was really good and had been so for some days. When we got there, looking at the amount of fishingnets laid there, it must have been pleny of fish on that location Plenty, plenty fishing nets there! I heard rumours telling there was 500kg. salmon in some of the nets. Wonder how many of them were wild fish, ment to be thrown back!

Anyway, some boats made really well during the day, catching fish more or less easily. Those boats had their positions saved from day before, and they were rewarded for the work trying to find the fishy spots, with filling their limits with three fish/person. Some of them compeeted in the fishingcompetition, some as we, didn't.

The water was really cold, not reaching 2 degrees anywhere. Of some reason we found our fishes on even colder water. The two salmon we got was taken on baits rigged on the downriggers. The big one took on a watermelon UV headed baitfish on 26 feet and the smaller on a chromeheaded bait tackled to a VK-salmon flasher. It bit on 30 feet. We had an undersized salmon and a good fish lost too, and some bites on the baitfish we failed to see the strikes at.

Very tricky fishing it was. We got some positions from Johan, Team TOK and Robban at fishonnet, (thanks, i will reward that). Those positions worked fine! Thanks;-).

Young adept Linus did really well today. This adept will be on the Warrior more times.

I will be Back to Vänern on friday. Trying to catch big trout:-)

Most of what is seen in these tackleboxes are prototypes, ment to be in production if testing works out. We tried out some new chrome and UV-colours with fishscaletape. They look really good and they worked fine in the clear water north Brommö.

I had the opportunity to go fishing with Pertti Nevalainen, team Salsa/Suzuki Finland, 17-18 april. Yesterday we went up to Brommö, fishing east of ammuntionstippen and south from there. There where some fish caught there on saturday, but when we got there, the warm waterspots were gone. Temperature was 1.7-2.5 degrees, not the over 3 degrees warm water they had on saturday. Warmest water we found just outside the inlet to Brommösund, where also some boats had good fishing. We still managed to catch three fish between 65-70cm and an undersized trout. Fish bit from riggers, 30-45 feet and surface 50g. led. We also met "Storfan". A salmon or trout taking a bait from the planer, weighed down with 50g led. The fish pulled out line constantly for a couple of minutes. Even though it was very cold in the water the fish was unstopable. We didn't see the fish before it was lost. The tackle came up in one piece, with a badly ripped baitfish, so we might have met "Storfan"salmon himself :-) We take him another day. The photo shows Team Roope from Finland.

Concentration is on the instruments. Using baitfish as tackle and keeping a steady pace is one of the secrets for good fishing for Pertti and his crew.

Today a fishingboat from Finland got problem with boat taking in water. The boat went down fast, but the crew managed to call for help with VHS-radio. They were picked up by other boats fishing in the same area, before Sjöräddningen got there. I believe sjöräddningen managed to save the boat, but i'm not sure. Fishermen atleast survived the cold swim. Reason for the accident is not known, but the boat was taking in water very fast, so there must have been a bad connection somewhere, taking in water, little bit at the time, till it was enough, and the boat went down. They had good fishing this morning, so they might not have observed there was somthing wrong with the boat.

I have been fishing east of Kållandsö today. There was a little bit calmer, but wind was more then 10m/sek, so it was a very bumpy ride back after we had fished our way north for some miles. Got nothing today.

+1.7 degrees warm water wasn't making the fishing better. They have warmer water in Brommösund and shelter from the strong wind, so that's where to go fishing tomorrow. There will some boats there. That's good, considering anything can happen on the lake, boats sinking aso. So, it's good there is someone not far away if something goes wrong. There is not really swimmingtemperature in Lake Vänern now!

Went to Hästholmen, Lake Vättern on sunday. Testing the boat and equipment. Northerly wind, 5-8m/sek. I didn't have a clue where to start fishing so i went up to Stocklycke, went west from there, fished my way out to deeper water. Tried to fish over some spots that have given fish before. Continued fishing my way down to the pumphouse, trying to find a spot with little warmer water, but failed doing that. Warmest water i found during whole day was a so small that i almost missed it on the fishfinder. +1.1 degrees, 1000m west the pumphouse ! Average temperature was some +0.8 degrees. Not very warm, but some people caught fish anyway. There was this Grandslam competition. 20 boats taking part. I had my mother and another friend with me. None of them experienced in fishing from a boat, so i didn't join the 20 other boats in the competition. But, thanks, Team Gesse for asking;-) Maybe next time!

Anyway, I used my baitfish, but should have used smaller minnows this day, since that's what i was told the fish bit on. Plastic, lightly weighed down in the surface was the melody. I still went for using my baitfish. It's fun to try to get a nice, fishy swim on the baits, so i did that. I simply had to since i forgot the tacklebox with the small Conrads and Strike Pros home, so i just played with the baits whole day long. I also forgot the sparebatteries to the camera, so there where not a single photo taken this day.

Credits to the fishermen who managed to catch fish i the GrandSlam competition. Not so much credits for some boats fishing closer then 300m out from the cliffs. They might have found small spots that held fish, but thats not a reason to fish in front of the people fishing from the cliffs. Those fisherman sometimes use not so visible clothing, hard to see, but they can sit there and try to catch fish too. So, regardless if there is people visible or not fishing from the cliffs, i think we boaters can stay outside 300m from them. Besides that i believe it's forbidden to to go closer then that.

Everything on the boat worked fine today. So did, my new car. With the Skoda Scout it was really nice to pull the trailer:-)

Look at this salmon caught by fellow two German fisherman in 2008 from Rügen, Germany. The fish was caught with Vuoksiraksi baithead with an unknown bait tackled to it. The salmon weighed 22.4kg and was 1.30m long! A fish to be remembered.

Late congratulatios to the fisherman. These German fishermen will be rewarded by Vuoksivieheet for this catch.

Season has started late in Rügen, three months delayed! Salmon is at those waters now, so it will take some time before they reach Swedish costal waters moving further north to their spawningrivers. I have booked accomodation on Hasslö, Karlskrona week 19, and hopefully the big forerunners are there at that time. We will be some boats fishing there. I will fish with Bert Lachner and he has experience from fishing those waters, with many nice salmon logged on him. Looking good!

Yesterday i went up to Vårgårda and picked up my new car. I took my bicycle the 85km, made the deal and went home a lot more comfortable in the Skoda Octavia Scout. It's a dieselengine in it and 4x4 by haldex. Perfect to bring my boat around to where ever i want to fish. Lots of space and much safer then the old Volvo i had before. It has nice things as powerwindows and AC. Things that i never have had in my earlier cars. This will be just fine!

Dephtraider for sale. This unit is one of the best to measure speed and temperaure. This one is the first in Sweden. Kell laboraties in USA recalculated the software so Dephtraider showed the speed and temp in kmh or knots and celcius. This unit is little bit unique, since it's the first Kell laboraties sent us after we convinced them there was a market for Depthraiders here in Scandinavia. All they had to do was set the numbers so we could read them. And they did. This is unit nr.1. It has worked perfectly for many years. 2500kr is what i want for it. More info? Call or mail me.

This is how a baitfish swims with the frontloop bent just slightly to either side. Hookwire is following the stomach on the baitfish. I think the bait fishes more effective if the loop is bent less because current and speed on the boat will change, and then the rollspeed on the baitfish aswell. Slower turns works better then fast, specially when going for the big ones:-) Both setups will fish fine from 1-4 knots. (1.8-7.2km/h)

Here the tacklehook is bent to the side of the baifish, towards the back. The faster you go, the less you need to bend the tackle. This set up works really nice on most flashers too. The loop in front of the tackle is slightly bent as usually. Either way can work fine, depending on the size of the baithfish, speed aso. Try to bend the frontloop opposite the way you bend the hookwire. This way you will find an erratic, pulsing movement and you are ready to go. Start testing!

I did some work on the interior today. I had the latest sticker from www.merlaxivattern.se put among the others on the inside of the boat. I don't know where else to put them and i just wonder where to put them when the inside is full!? Maybe pimp up some flashers? IceAge winter has been good for the fish in the lakes. Warrior at rest!

Boat looked like this last sunday. I have kept most of the snow of her whole winter since the weight from the snow is bad for the canopy. It looked good with the snow starting melting this weekend but now i have another 10cm snow covering her with more to come. I have booked a time for an appointment with Mr.Outboard himself, Mr.Kling at Skene järn, Skene. This man is a very good with boatengines so he will help me with some maintanence, and she will be ready to go in a couple of months to battle the big salmons in Lake Vänern. It's a little bit early, but at some point i know it will be a bit stressful to get the boat completely ready for fishing, so i do the main work earlier.

Winter has been very good otherwise. I have completed 800km on my crosscountry skiis. Tracks have been open all over the community so i have just kept going. Snowy, cold days i have done the training in a gym. So when spring comes i will be more then ready for the challenge on the big lakes. And the Warrior too, with all the rest she has had this winter + some TLC.

Here are som photos of a really nice boat i use to work on summertime. S/S Puhois is one of two remaining steamers in Finland, with the hull built of wood. She had a duty at times when logs were transported on water; she has a crane, crew lifted up bunches of 25 logs and wrapped a steelwire around it, for easier handling for the towboats. She is now on museumregistration. That means she has to remain original, atleast externaly. She has about 25 beds so there is plenty of space on her. There is a sauna too, wich adds some luxury to it.

24 meter long, 5.1 m wide makes her a big vessel. She has a 65 hp engine. Not many horsepowers, but the torque is massive. She will cruise at 6 knots, with 8 as topspeed. With tailwind of course:-) I am lucky to have been on S/S Puhois for some summers now. I'm a stearmen and deckhand on her plus just be around and do this and that kind of sources. There is also a set of downriggers to use, so i can use this pearl to go fishing ;-) Quite unique trollingboat, eh?

New Battery for the Warrior.

I bought a new battery for my boat. It's an Deka Seamate AGM (AbsorbedGlassMat). Completely sealed, no acid or explosive fumes coming out from this battery. The speifications are the same as for an ordinary battery, weight, size aso.

Amp.hours are 79. Prize is the double compared with an ordinary acidbattery but an battery with AGM will last longer and with the advantages it have, it is well worth the money. This type of battery also has better ability to last longer even if t is completely drawn out and recharged more times than an ordinary battery. I bought it from Svenska Batterilagret in Borås. Deka in made in USA.

I have had my recent battery for more than five years and thought it was time to update it. It works, but i don't know for how long. A battery in a boat lives a hard life. They can work well, start the engine and get the instruments working. But once you leave the harbour and give gas, it could be good to have in mind that an fuelinjected outboarder needs 11.9 Volts to have enough power for the ignition. Lover voltage in battery than that, and engine will stop. The more gas you give, the more power the engine takes out for the ignition. If you have an old battery it will be a hard work for it to do that job, especially with lights, GPS, fishfinder and all other things that is running at the same time. Wintertime it will be even harder for it. If a fuelinjected engine stops while running, due to an bad battery; stop and turn off all consumers. Wait some minutes and then start up the engine again. But DO NOT try to give gas. Engine will stop again. There is not enough voltage for the ignition, so just let it run on idle for a long time. Hopefully you are not outside Omberg, Lake Vättern in an hard westerly wind as i was when my engine did just what i described above. I managed to get back to Hästholmen, one experince richer what fishing from a boat wintertime can be like when it's cold. My battery in the boat, at that time was just low on water and voltage. Just a little but enough that day to almost make my day really bad. A battery, the best you can get is a cheap ensurance for safety. A double set up of batterys is a good way to add safety too, but heavier and more expensive. A small kicker next to the big engine is good aswell. / Jussi

Look at this. Perfekt to prevent problems with brakes or wheelbearings. When i imported my trailer from England it had something like this mounted to protect and grease the bearings. The idea is simple. Just pump in the grease and the spring system will make sure there is enough of it to keep water away. The bearing get new grease all the time. I have had my trailer for five years and this far i have done nothing to it. Just the ordinary things, adjusting brakes aso. These bearingprotecters doesn't mean that you can leave the ordinary service, maintenance undone, but they do make things a lot easier.

I have copied the photos from the webpages. Well aware that i'm not allowed to do that. I let the photos be here till someone tells me to remove them! I think theese bearingsavers are good things. Making it more safe to drive around in bad conditions with our boattrailers, especially now, wintertime. I have seen what happens when bearings get jammed due to bad grease or none at all. The friction will make the brakepads and the drum even hotter. This will be to much for the bearing. Finally, It's not a pretty sight when a wheel leaves the rest of the trailer. No horrorstorryies to be told here! It's a lot more fun to be home in time, safe and sound.

There are a lot of places to order on the net. If you order them, measure the diameter on your hubs, so you get the right ones. Safe ride and Tight lines.

Warrior 165

Here are some photos of my boat. It's a Warrior 165. I bought her five years ago straight from the maker. I also imported the trailer at the same time. The boat is only 5.05 meters long, but the deck could fit on a much bigger boat. The hard top provides just enough shelter to ceep the rain and wind away, but sleeping in this boat is not good. This is a fishingboat, not a compromise, not made for camping. She is built to stand the Irish Sea, wich means marin conditions and water scimilar to Lake Vättern and Vänern. That means current water with high, short waves. I have been out in windy 16 m/sec. with her. It's not really effective, but it's possible. Did i fish that day? No comments! She handles the waves and swell very well. There is no selfdraining on this model, so from floor to rails there is 85cm of hight. No risk falling out from this boat. I have had waves coming in over the hard top, leaving plenty of water on the deck, so a bilgepump with high capacity is a must on a boat like this. That big deck collectes a lot of water.
With a Suzuki 70 4-stroke, she will cruise 12-13 knots in rough water, wind 8-10 m/sec. Some banging and slaming, but she will stay together. Handrolled glassfiber with some layers of kevlar in the bottom will do the job and ensure that. The gelcoat on the boat is not best quality. There are some hairstringcracks here and there all over the boat. I don't know if it is from five years abuse on the lake, bouncing around on the trailer for 10000 km or just poor gelcoat. I think little of both. The hairstring cracks are not to much to worry about and i just wax the boat regularily. She is resting on the trailer when not on the lake, well taken care of so she will last for many more years. I haven't seen any other Warriors on Swedish water, except in Baltic Sea, Simrishamn. These boats are popular in Denmark and according to the Warrioragent in Denmark, he has sold three Warrior boats to Sweden. I haven't seen any of them! A good friend of mine, Pedersen, "Team Tortuga" from Motala had a Warrior when i bought mine, but he's fishing from a Campion explorer 542 now, selling away the little fishingmachine, so now I would like to know if there is any other Warriorowners out there, in Sweden. I would like to get in contact with them, i want to know how they they are doing with their boats. As i said the gelcoat is not good on my boat, but overall the boat is just fantastic. The issue with the gelcoat should have been delt with now, as far as i know.
I have all the contacts, phonenumbers and emailadresses, if someone want to import their own boat from England. I can help you with that. Warriors can be bought from Denmark too, but then they are expensive, so importing one from GB can be a good affair. Check out the boats at www.warriorboats.co.uk
